Macau Information

Languages

Chinese and Portuguese are the official languages, with Cantonese being most widely spoken. English and Mandarin are used in tourist areas. Portuguese is hardly used.

Currency Information

The Pataca (MOP$) is the currency in Macau. The MOP$ is linked to the Hong Kong dollar, which is also accepted as currency in Macau. If paying retailers, restaurants, bars and drivers in HK dollars, you will probably get your change in MOP$ since they are not expected to provide customers’ change in HK dollars. Chinese RMB yuan is also accepted in some shops, but again, change may be given in MOP$.

The exchange rate is MOP$103.20 = HK$100.00, but there is an acceptable variation up to 10%.

For other exchange rates please visit http://www.xe.com

Foreign currency/travellers cheques can be changed in hotels, banks, and authorised exchange dealers located all around the city.

Most credit cards are accepted in many hotels, shops, and restaurants. However, they may not be accepted for amounts less than MOP$100.

Normal bank opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, and open during lunchtime.
